We’ve all had a major break-up and have gone into it setting firm limits and standing strong in our position.

But then….

  • We doubt our ability to be without them,
  • We don’t take the risk to do something different,
  • We convince ourselves that we made a mistake….

And we go running back.

Why Do We Do It??????

We miss having someone, ANYONE, around and feel lonely.
We hold onto the hope it will be different “this time.”
The initial pain subsides and we forget how bad it really was.
Eventually the fear of the unknown overrides the pain of the familiar……

And we go running back.

Here’s how I’ve found that Regis Philbin and “Who Wants to Be A Millionaire” have your answers to making lasting change.

In the game show, in order to win, you have to correctly answer fifteen questions of increasing difficulty and they provide various tools to support you. Using the tools in the right order and being consistent is what makes the difference.

In a break-up where you have this viscous cycle, it can be broken by the same philosophy and here’s how:

  1. Have a Positive Cheering Audience Around You – Ground yourself with people in your life that love and support you.
  2. Phone A Friend – You aren’t supposed to have all the answers and you aren’t supposed to do it alone! Phone a friend or even more importantly, your coach (someone who has your best interest at heart) NOTE: it’s important that the person you call is not judgmental and can actually help you get through this time without convoluting their advice with their own personal beliefs.
  3. Ask The Audience – Remember, the audience is the positive cheering people so make sure you are talking and spending time with the people in YOUR audience even before you have to ask.
  4. 50/50 – Your time was split between yourself and your relationship. Now, think about how you would meet your own needs if all the men in the world disappeared. Do you love a certain activity but have been putting it off due to your relationship? What do YOU really want to do? Just set that FIRST appointment with a trainer or an art class or dance class or you name it. JUST DO IT!
  5. Most importantly, remember, that YOU CAN WIN. Each step does increase with difficulty just as the game show does. The people who WIN are CONSISTENT and use the tools they have.
